Before and during review
Prepare for SubmissionPREPARE_FOR_SUBMISSION
A new version exists in App Store Connect but hasn't been sent to App Review. You are still adding the build, screenshots or other details.
Next: nothing happens until you submit it.
You can: finish the version page, pick a build and add it to a submission for review.
Ready for ReviewREADY_FOR_REVIEW
All required details are in and the version is set to go to review, but the submission hasn't been sent yet.
Next: it moves to Waiting for Review once you submit.
You can: open the submission in App Store Connect and submit it.
Waiting for Export ComplianceWAITING_FOR_EXPORT_COMPLIANCE
Apple is reviewing the export compliance documents for your app's encryption (for example a CCATS file).
Next: once Apple accepts the documents, the version continues on its way.
You can: check the build's export compliance answers and any message from Apple about missing documents.
Waiting for ReviewWAITING_FOR_REVIEW
Apple received your submission but hasn't started the review yet. The version is in the queue.
Next: it moves to In Review when a reviewer picks it up. Apple doesn't promise a time; it varies.
You can: wait, or withdraw it from review if you need to change something. Withdrawing makes it Developer Rejected; when you submit again, it goes back into the review queue.
In ReviewIN_REVIEW
App Review is reviewing the version now.
Next: usually an approval (Pending Developer Release, or straight to processing if you chose automatic release) or a rejection with a message from App Review.
You can: keep an eye on App Review messages in case the reviewer has a question. You can still remove the submission from review.
App Review didn't accept the version. App Review's message explains the issues.
Next: nothing moves until you respond or submit again.
You can: read the message in App Store Connect, reply if you disagree or need clarity, or fix the issue and resubmit, with a new build if needed.
Metadata RejectedMETADATA_REJECTED
App Review didn't accept the version's metadata, such as the description, screenshots or other store details. The build itself wasn't the problem.
Next: once you fix the metadata and reply, App Review looks again. You usually don't need a new build.
You can: edit the metadata in App Store Connect and reply to App Review's message.
Invalid BinaryINVALID_BINARY
The build you submitted doesn't meet Apple's current build requirements.
Next: nothing until you choose a different build.
You can: upload a new build, or pick one that meets the requirements, and submit again.
Developer RejectedDEVELOPER_REJECTED
You (or someone on your team) removed the version from review. Despite the name, Apple didn't reject anything.
Next: nothing until you submit again.
You can: make your changes, then resubmit the same build or a new one. It joins the review queue again.
Replaced with New VersionREPLACED_WITH_NEW_VERSION
A newer version took the place of this one before it went live.
Next: nothing; follow the newer version instead.
You can: ignore this version.
Older names and other statuses
The App Store Connect API replaced its older version state with a new one. The older field had a few values you may still see in scripts, emails or older tools.
Ready for SaleREADY_FOR_SALE
The older name for a live version. Today it shows as Ready for Distribution.
